Ingredients

  • 8 thick slices brioche or Texas toast bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Fresh berries for serving
  • Powdered sugar for garnish optional

Method

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  2. Dip each bread slice into the custard mixture for about 20–30 seconds per side.
  3. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  4. Melt butter in the skillet.
  5. Place soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet.
  6. Cook for 3–4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  7. Repeat with the remaining bread, adding more butter as needed.
  8. Serve immediately with maple syrup, fresh berries, and powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • Thick-cut bread creates the best texture.
  • Slightly stale bread absorbs the custard without becoming soggy.
  • Avoid soaking the bread for too long.
  • Keep cooked French toast warm in a 200°F (95°C) oven while preparing the remaining slices.
  • Add orange zest or a splash of almond extract for extra flavor.
