Ingredients
  

  • 12 Hawaiian rolls
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Powdered sugar for serving
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Fresh berries for serving optional

Method
 

  1. Slice the Hawaiian rolls in half if desired.
  2. Whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Dip each Hawaiian roll into the custard mixture until lightly coated.
  4. Heat butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  5. Cook the soaked rolls for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  6. Continue cooking in batches, adding more butter if needed.
  7. Transfer to a serving plate.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar.
  9. Serve warm with maple syrup and fresh berries.

Notes

  • Do not soak the rolls too long or they may become too soft.
  • Use day-old Hawaiian rolls for the best texture.
  • Cook over medium heat to prevent burning.
  • Add orange zest to the custard for extra citrus flavor.
  • Keep cooked French toast warm in a 200°F (95°C) oven while finishing the remaining batches.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in a skillet or toaster oven.
