Soft Pretzel Bites Recipe

These soft pretzel bites are golden brown on the outside and fluffy on the inside with a classic chewy texture. They’re perfect for parties, game days, after-school snacks, or anytime you’re craving homemade pretzels. Serve them with warm cheese sauce, mustard, or your favorite dipping sauce for an irresistible treat. Easy to make and freezer-friendly, they're a crowd favorite.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet 2¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • cup baking soda
  • 10 cups water for boiling
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Coarse pretzel salt

Method
 

  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl.
  2. Let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  3. Add melted butter, salt, and flour.
  4. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough for 6–8 minutes until smooth.
  6. Place dough in a greased bowl and cover.
  7. Allow the dough to rise for about 1 hour or until doubled.
  8. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  9. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  10. Bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
  11. Punch down the dough.
  12. Divide dough into 8 equal pieces.
  13. Roll each piece into a long rope.
  14. Cut ropes into 1-inch bite-sized pieces.
  15. Boil pretzel bites in batches for 20–30 seconds.
  16. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on baking sheet.
  17. Whisk egg with 1 tablespoon water.
  18. Brush each pretzel bite with egg wash.
  19. Sprinkle generously with coarse pretzel salt.
  20. Bake for 12–15 minutes until deep golden brown.
  21. Serve warm with cheese sauce or mustard.

Notes

  • Do not overheat the water or it may kill the yeast.
  • Boiling in baking soda water creates the classic chewy pretzel crust.
  • For extra buttery flavor, brush warm pretzel bites with melted butter after baking.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze baked pretzel bites for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat in the oven or air fryer for the best texture.
